Correlation Between Nasal Breadth and Intercanthal Distance Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the correlation between nasal breadth and intercanthal distance among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the association between these two facial anthropometric dimensions. Nasal breadth and intercanthal distance are important measurements used in the assessment of facial morphology and individual anatomical variation. Understanding their relationship may provide useful information on facial proportions and contribute to the documentation of normal anatomical characteristics among young adults. The study will determine the nasal breadth and intercanthal distance of undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and direct anthropometric measurement procedures. Nasal breadth will be measured across the widest portion of the nose, while intercanthal distance will be measured as the horizontal distance between the medial canthi of both eyes. The study will describe the distribution of both measurements and determine the degree of association between nasal breadth and intercanthal distance among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through direct observation and standardized anthropometric measurements using suitable measuring instruments, with consistent positioning and anatomical landmarks maintained throughout the assessment. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while Pearson correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between nasal breadth and intercanthal distance. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in nasal breadth and intercanthal distance among the undergraduate students. The analysis is expected to indicate the direction and strength of the association between the two facial measurements. The findings may demonstrate whether individuals with greater nasal breadth tend to have corresponding differences in intercanthal distance within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, forensic practitioners, clinicians, and researchers involved in facial anthropometry and human identification. The information may provide reference data for comparative studies of facial dimensions and contribute to a better understanding of normal facial proportions. It may also be relevant to clinical and reconstructive procedures involving the nose and surrounding facial structures. The study will conclude by establishing the nature and strength of the correlation between nasal breadth and intercanthal distance among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures be maintained when assessing facial dimensions to improve reliability and comparability. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations are recommended to provide broader reference information on the relationship between nasal and orbital facial measurements.
