Correlation Between Palpebral Fissure Length and Intercanthal Distance Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study will examine the correlation between palpebral fissure length and intercanthal distance among undergraduate students, with the aim of determining the extent to which these two ocular anthropometric dimensions are associated. Palpebral fissure length represents the horizontal distance between the medial and lateral canthi of the eye, while intercanthal distance refers to the distance between the medial canthi of both eyes. These measurements are important components of facial anthropometry and may contribute to the understanding of individual variation in ocular and facial morphology. The study will specifically determine the mean palpebral fissure length and intercanthal distance among the participants and assess the strength and direction of the relationship between the two dimensions. Palpebral fissure length will be measured using standardized anatomical landmarks at the medial and lateral canthi, while intercanthal distance will be measured between the corresponding medial canthi of the right and left eyes. Standardized measurement procedures will be maintained to minimize measurement variation. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and relevant demographic information will be obtained from the participants. Direct anthropometric measurements will be taken using suitable standardized instruments under consistent positioning and measurement conditions. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while Pearson correlation analysis will be employed to determine the strength and direction of the association between palpebral fissure length and intercanthal distance. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in both palpebral fissure length and intercanthal distance among the undergraduate students. A positive, negative, or weak association may be observed between the two ocular dimensions depending on the distribution of measurements within the study population. The findings are expected to provide information on the degree to which variation in one ocular dimension corresponds with variation in the other, without implying a causal relationship. The findings of the study will be useful to anatomists and anthropologists in understanding ocular and facial anthropometric variation. They may also provide relevant information for ophthalmic and craniofacial assessment, forensic anthropology, facial identification, and clinical research. The findings may further contribute to the establishment of reference data for palpebral fissure and intercanthal measurements among undergraduate-aged young adults. The study will conclude by providing information on the correlation between palpebral fissure length and intercanthal distance among undergraduate students. Standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures are recommended to improve the reliability and reproducibility of ocular anthropometric assessments. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations are recommended to establish broader reference values and examine population-related variations in ocular dimensions.
