Effect of Clinical Case Illustrations on Students’ Understanding of Applied Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of clinical case illustrations on students’ understanding of applied anatomy among undergraduate students. Applied anatomy involves the integration of anatomical knowledge with clinical conditions, symptoms, physical examination findings, diagnostic procedures, and common healthcare practices. Clinical case illustrations present anatomical concepts within realistic or representative clinical situations, allowing students to connect theoretical anatomical information with practical clinical applications. The study will therefore investigate whether the use of clinical case illustrations can improve students’ understanding of applied anatomy. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline understanding of applied anatomy, assessing their understanding following exposure to clinical case illustrations, evaluating their ability to relate anatomical structures to clinical conditions, and identifying areas of applied anatomy that may be better understood through case-based illustrations. Attention will be given to students’ recognition of relevant anatomical structures, anatomical relationships, clinical applications, and interpretation of basic clinical situations involving different regions of the human body. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students enrolled in anatomy or related health science programmes will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to suitable study groups. The intervention group will receive applied anatomy instruction supported by clinical case illustrations, while the comparison group will receive conventional instruction without the additional case illustrations. Data will be collected using standardized pre-tests and post-tests containing objective questions, clinical scenarios, diagrams, and structure-identification tasks. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be used to determine differences between the groups. The study is expected to reveal improved understanding of applied anatomy among students exposed to clinical case illustrations. The use of clinical situations may help students recognize the relevance of anatomical structures to symptoms, physical findings, injuries, diagnostic procedures, and other clinical conditions. Students may demonstrate better ability to connect anatomical relationships with practical clinical problems, although complex anatomical regions, unfamiliar cases, and conditions involving multiple structures may continue to present difficulties. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, and other health science educators involved in applied anatomy instruction. The study may provide useful information on the value of clinically oriented illustrations in helping students connect theoretical anatomy with clinical practice. It may also contribute to the development of teaching approaches that encourage meaningful learning, clinical reasoning, and effective application of anatomical knowledge among undergraduate health science students. The study will conclude by determining the effect of clinical case illustrations on students’ understanding of applied anatomy. It is recommended that appropriately designed clinical case illustrations be incorporated into applied anatomy teaching where suitable to help students relate anatomical structures and relationships to practical clinical situations, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate their effectiveness across different areas of applied anatomy education.
