Effect of Gamified Spotter Practice on Students’ Speed of Anatomical Identification
Abstract
The study examines the effect of gamified spotter practice on students’ speed of anatomical identification, with emphasis on the use of game-based practical activities to improve the rapid recognition of anatomical structures during practical learning. Spotter examinations require students to identify anatomical structures within limited periods and therefore demand both accurate knowledge and efficient visual recognition. Incorporating gamified elements such as timed challenges, scoring systems, levels, instant feedback, and repeated identification tasks may provide an engaging approach to developing students’ speed and confidence during anatomical identification. The study will assess students’ speed of anatomical identification before and after exposure to gamified spotter practice. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline speed of identifying anatomical structures, implementing structured gamified spotter activities, evaluating students’ identification speed following the intervention, and comparing identification performance before and after the intervention. The practice sessions will involve selected anatomical specimens, models, images, or other appropriate spotter materials presented under controlled time conditions. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to suitable study groups where applicable. Data will be collected through timed practical identification tests administered before and after the intervention, with each student’s identification time and accuracy recorded. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine whether observed changes in identification speed are statistically significant. The study is expected to reveal an improvement in students’ speed of anatomical identification following participation in gamified spotter practice. Students exposed to repeated timed identification activities are expected to demonstrate faster recognition of familiar anatomical structures and improved ability to respond within limited examination periods. Structures that are visually similar, less distinct, or more difficult to distinguish may continue to require longer identification times despite the intervention. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, practical instructors, curriculum planners, and students by providing information on the potential value of gamified activities in practical anatomy education. The findings may support the development of engaging spotter revision strategies that combine repetition, timed practice, immediate feedback, and active student participation. Such approaches may also help students become more familiar with practical examination conditions and improve their confidence in rapid anatomical recognition. The study will conclude by determining the effect of gamified spotter practice on students’ speed of anatomical identification. It is recommended that appropriately structured gamified spotter activities be incorporated into anatomy practical revision where feasible, with emphasis on accurate identification alongside speed. Adequate supervision, repeated practice, appropriate timing, and constructive feedback should be maintained, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are recommended.
