Effect of Virtual Reality Anatomy on Students’ Understanding of Regional Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of virtual reality anatomy on students’ understanding of regional anatomy, with emphasis on how immersive three-dimensional visualization may improve students’ ability to recognize anatomical structures, understand their spatial relationships, and appreciate the arrangement of structures within different body regions. Regional anatomy requires students to develop a clear understanding of the position, relationships, and organization of structures within specific anatomical areas. Virtual reality may provide an interactive learning environment in which students can explore anatomical structures from different perspectives and develop a more comprehensive understanding of regional anatomy. The study will assess the effect of virtual reality anatomy on students’ understanding of selected regional anatomical structures. The specific objectives will include determining students’ level of regional anatomy knowledge before exposure to virtual reality learning, assessing their level of understanding after the intervention, evaluating their ability to identify structures and describe their spatial relationships, and comparing students’ performance before and after the use of virtual reality anatomy. The study will also identify regional anatomical structures that remain difficult for students to understand following the intervention. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant learning groups. Data will be collected using standardized regional anatomy knowledge tests and practical structure identification assessments administered before and after exposure to virtual reality anatomy. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine differences in students’ performance following the intervention. The study is expected to reveal an improvement in students’ understanding of regional anatomy following exposure to virtual reality anatomy. Students may demonstrate better recognition of anatomical structures, improved understanding of spatial relationships, and greater ability to visualize structures from different orientations. The improvement may be particularly evident in regions containing complex, closely related, or deeply situated structures, although some students may continue to experience difficulties with highly detailed anatomical relationships. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and health science educators involved in undergraduate anatomy teaching. The study may provide evidence on the educational value of immersive virtual reality as a complementary approach to conventional anatomy teaching. It may also support the integration of three-dimensional and interactive learning technologies with cadaveric specimens, prosections, anatomical models, and other practical resources to improve students’ understanding of complex regional anatomy. The study will conclude by determining the effect of virtual reality anatomy on students’ understanding of regional anatomy. It is recommended that virtual reality-based learning should be appropriately incorporated into anatomy education alongside conventional practical and theoretical teaching methods. Further studies involving larger student populations, different anatomical regions, and longer assessment periods are recommended to determine the sustained educational value of virtual reality in regional anatomy learning.
