Morphological Assessment of the Thyroarytenoid Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological characteristics of the thyroarytenoid muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its shape, size, length, thickness, attachment, and overall anatomical configuration. The thyroarytenoid muscle is an intrinsic muscle of the larynx that extends from the inner surface of the thyroid cartilage to the arytenoid cartilage and plays an important role in the regulation of vocal fold tension and laryngeal function. Knowledge of its morphology is important for understanding anatomical variation within the larynx and may have clinical relevance in voice production, swallowing, laryngeal imaging, and surgical procedures involving the vocal folds. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the thyroarytenoid muscle among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the muscle, determining its measurable dimensions, assessing variations in its shape, attachment, and configuration, documenting the frequency of the observed patterns, and comparing the morphological characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed.
