Morphological Characteristics of the Thyrohyoid Muscle Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological characteristics of the thyrohyoid muscle among young adults, with emphasis on its shape, size, length, thickness, attachment pattern, and overall anatomical configuration. The thyrohyoid muscle is a short infrahyoid muscle that extends between the thyroid cartilage and hyoid bone and contributes to the elevation of the larynx or depression of the hyoid bone depending on the functional position of these structures. Knowledge of its morphology is important for understanding anatomical variation within the anterior neck and may have clinical relevance in swallowing, voice production, radiological assessment, and surgical procedures involving the laryngeal and hyoid regions. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the thyrohyoid muscle among young adults using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the thyrohyoid muscle, determining its measurable dimensions, assessing variations in its shape and attachment, documenting its anatomical configuration, and comparing the observed characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate assessment procedures be used when evaluating the thyrohyoid muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of its morphological variability.
