Morphological Variation of the Articular Disc of the Temporomandibular Joint Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, thickness, and structural configuration. The articular disc is a fibrocartilaginous structure located between the mandibular condyle and temporal bone within the temporomandibular joint. It contributes to the separation of the joint into functional compartments and facilitates smooth mandibular movements during mastication and other oral activities. Understanding variations in its morphology is important for appreciating normal joint anatomy and for supporting the assessment of temporomandibular joint structures. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint among young adults. The specific objectives will include identifying different disc shapes and configurations, determining selected dimensions and thickness measurements, documenting variations in the relative proportions of its anatomical regions, and examining bilateral differences in disc morphology where applicable. The study will also assess selected anatomical relationships between the articular disc and other components of the temporomandibular joint. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the articular disc will be obtained using standardized imaging-based assessment procedures, particularly appropriate magnetic resonance imaging or other suitable methods depending on the study setting. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to determine significant differences or associations among selected morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the shape, dimensions, thickness, and configuration of the articular disc among the participants. Differences may be observed in the morphology of selected disc regions and between the right and left temporomandibular joints. Some measurements may demonstrate statistically significant bilateral differences, while other characteristics may show substantial similarity. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the articular disc exhibits measurable morphological variability among young adults. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of temporomandibular joint conditions. Information on the morphology of the articular disc may support anatomical education, interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging findings, understanding of normal joint variation, and assessment of structural characteristics relevant to clinical evaluation of the temporomandibular joint. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint among the study population. It is recommended that standardized imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the articular disc and that both sides of the joint be considered during assessment. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on articular disc morphology and anatomical variability.
