Morphological Variation of the Atlas Vertebra Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the atlas vertebra among young adults. The atlas, or first cervical vertebra, is a distinctive vertebra that supports the skull and contributes to movements and stability of the upper cervical spine. Its anatomical morphology may vary in the dimensions and configuration of structures such as the anterior and posterior arches, lateral masses, transverse processes, and vertebral foramen. Documenting these variations is important because differences in atlas morphology may have implications for radiological assessment, surgical procedures, spinal interventions, and the interpretation of anatomical abnormalities. The study aims to determine the morphological characteristics of the atlas vertebra among young adults. It will specifically assess variations in selected dimensions and structural features of the atlas, including the anterior and posterior arches, lateral masses, transverse processes, and vertebral foramen, and determine the frequency and distribution of the observed morphological patterns within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The morphology and dimensions of the atlas vertebra will be assessed using standardized osteological or appropriate imaging-based procedures and anatomical landmarks.
