Morphological Variation of the Cribriform Plate Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the cribriform plate among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical features and structural configuration. The cribriform plate is a delicate part of the ethmoid bone that forms a portion of the roof of the nasal cavity and contributes to the floor of the anterior cranial fossa. Its anatomical morphology is important because it is closely related to the olfactory structures and the anterior cranial fossa, while variations in its shape, size, and structural features may have relevance in anatomical identification, radiological interpretation, and surgical procedures involving the nasal and cranial regions. The study aims to determine the morphological patterns of the cribriform plate among undergraduate students and document the frequency of the identified variations. It will specifically assess selected morphological features of the cribriform plate, determine the occurrence of different structural patterns, and describe the distribution of these variations among the study participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be employed for the study. Appropriate sampling procedures will be used to select eligible undergraduate students, while the cribriform plate will be assessed using suitable imaging-based or osteological methods that allow accurate visualization of its delicate anatomical structure. Standardized anatomical criteria will be applied to identify and classify the observed morphological features. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, with appropriate comparative analysis where necessary. The study is expected to reveal appreciable morphological variation in the cribriform plate among the participants, including differences in selected dimensions, shape, configuration, and other identifiable anatomical features. The findings may demonstrate that the cribriform plate does not exhibit a completely uniform morphology among young adults, thereby providing additional information on normal anatomical variation within the anterior cranial and nasal regions. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the nasal cavity and anterior cranial fossa. The documented variations may contribute to improved understanding of the anatomical characteristics of the cribriform plate and provide useful reference information for radiological interpretation, anatomical education, surgical planning, and future craniofacial studies. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological patterns and variations of the cribriform plate among undergraduate students. It is recommended that detailed anatomical and imaging assessments of the cribriform plate be incorporated into relevant anatomical studies and that further research involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphological characteristics.
