Morphological Variation of the Cubital Tunnel Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the cubital tunnel among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, configuration, and anatomical relationships. The cubital tunnel is a passageway located at the medial aspect of the elbow through which the ulnar nerve passes around the elbow region. Its anatomical characteristics are important for understanding variations in the structures surrounding the ulnar nerve and for supporting the assessment of conditions and clinical procedures involving the medial elbow and upper limb. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the cubital tunnel among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the cubital tunnel, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting variations in its anatomical relationships, and comparing selected characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the cubital tunnel will be obtained using standardized imaging or anatomical procedures, depending on the assessment method employed. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess observed differences and associations. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the cubital tunnel, including variations in its shape, dimensions, configuration, and relationship with surrounding anatomical structures. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed in selected dimensions or morphological features. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the cubital tunnel exhibits measurable anatomical variation among individuals and that these differences may be relevant to the anatomical environment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the elbow and upper limb. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the cubital tunnel, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
