Morphological Variation of the Flexor Pollicis Longus Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the flexor pollicis longus muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its presence, muscle belly configuration, tendon characteristics, and other anatomical features. The flexor pollicis longus is a deep muscle of the anterior compartment of the forearm that primarily flexes the interphalangeal joint of the thumb and contributes to functional movement of the hand. Variations in its morphology may occur among individuals and may have relevance to the anatomical and clinical assessment of the forearm and hand. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the flexor pollicis longus muscle among undergraduate students and document the different patterns of variation observed. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the muscle belly configuration, assessing selected muscle and tendon dimensions, documenting variations in the tendon course and attachment, and comparing the observed morphological characteristics between the right and left upper limbs where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The flexor pollicis longus muscle will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate clinical, imaging, or osteological procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied where necessary to assess relevant differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the flexor pollicis longus muscle among the participants. Variations may be observed in muscle belly size and configuration, tendon dimensions, tendon course, and other anatomical characteristics, with possible differences between the right and left upper limbs. The findings are expected to demonstrate measurable individual variation in the morphology of the flexor pollicis longus, although the frequency and extent of specific variations will depend on the characteristics of the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopaedic and hand surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. Knowledge of flexor pollicis longus morphology may support the interpretation of imaging findings and contribute to anatomical understanding during procedures involving the forearm, wrist, and thumb. The study may also provide useful reference information for understanding variations that may influence assessment of thumb movement and function. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the flexor pollicis longus muscle among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating variations of the muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphology and anatomical configuration.
