Morphological Variation of the Foramen Ovale Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the foramen ovale among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, size, and anatomical configuration. The foramen ovale is an important opening in the greater wing of the sphenoid bone that provides passage for the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve, accessory meningeal vessels, and other associated structures. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding variations in the skull base and for supporting clinical procedures involving the middle cranial fossa. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the foramen ovale using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes of the foramen ovale, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting variations in its anatomical configuration, and comparing the observed characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate participants or suitable skull imaging/osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the foramen ovale will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the foramen ovale, including variations in its shape and dimensions. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed, with some measurements potentially showing statistically significant side-related variation. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the morphology of the foramen ovale may vary among individuals and that such variation should be considered when interpreting anatomical or radiological findings. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, neurologists, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in procedures or assessments involving the skull base. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding the anatomical variability of the foramen ovale and may support the interpretation of imaging findings and procedures involving structures passing through or adjacent to the foramen. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the foramen ovale among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the foramen ovale, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
