Morphological Variation of the Guyon’s Canal Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of Guyon’s canal among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, boundaries, and overall anatomical configuration. Guyon’s canal is a fibro-osseous passageway located on the ulnar aspect of the wrist through which the ulnar nerve and ulnar artery enter the hand. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding anatomical variation and for supporting the assessment of conditions and clinical procedures involving the ulnar neurovascular structures. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of Guyon’s canal among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes and configurations of Guyon’s canal, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting variations in its boundaries and anatomical relationships, and comparing selected morphological characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of Guyon’s canal will be obtained using standardized imaging or anatomical procedures, depending on the assessment method employed. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess observed differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of Guyon’s canal, including variations in its shape, length, width, depth, boundaries, and overall configuration. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed in selected dimensions or morphological features. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the morphology of Guyon’s canal varies among individuals and that such variation may influence the anatomical relationships of the ulnar nerve and ulnar artery within the canal. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, hand surgeons, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the wrist and hand. The study may provide useful anatomical reference information for understanding normal variation in Guyon’s canal morphology and may support the interpretation of imaging findings and procedures involving the ulnar nerve, ulnar artery, and surrounding structures. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of Guyon’s canal among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating Guyon’s canal, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
