Morphological Variation of the Inferior Mesenteric Artery Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the inferior mesenteric artery among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its origin, course, branching pattern, and general anatomical configuration. The inferior mesenteric artery is an important branch of the abdominal aorta that supplies the distal part of the large intestine and contributes to the arterial network of the hindgut. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics and variations is important for understanding abdominal vascular anatomy, interpreting diagnostic images, and supporting surgical procedures involving the colon and surrounding structures. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the inferior mesenteric artery among young adults using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the origin and course of the artery, documenting differences in its branching pattern, determining selected vascular dimensions, and assessing the frequency and distribution of the observed morphological patterns among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the inferior mesenteric artery will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical assessment procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed vascular characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the origin, course, branching pattern, and dimensions of the inferior mesenteric artery among the participants. Differences in the arrangement and distribution of its major branches may also be observed, with some morphological characteristics potentially showing statistically significant variation between individuals or relevant participant groups. These findings are expected to demonstrate the presence of normal anatomical variability within the arterial supply of the distal large intestine. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, vascular surgeons, general surgeons, colorectal surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in abdominal diagnosis and surgical procedures. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in the inferior mesenteric artery be considered during anatomical and radiological assessment and surgical procedures involving the abdomen, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on inferior mesenteric arterial morphology.
