Morphological Variation of the Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the latissimus dorsi muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical configuration, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The latissimus dorsi is a broad, flat muscle located in the posterior trunk and is an important muscle of the shoulder and upper limb. It contributes to extension, adduction, and medial rotation of the arm and plays an important role in movements involving the shoulder girdle and trunk. Understanding its morphological characteristics is important for appreciating normal anatomical variation and for supporting clinical and surgical procedures involving the back, thorax, and upper limb. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the latissimus dorsi muscle among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the muscle, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting differences in its anatomical attachments and muscular pattern, and examining bilateral variations where applicable. The study will also consider the relationship of the muscle with relevant anatomical landmarks in order to provide a clearer description of its morphological characteristics. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the latissimus dorsi muscle will be obtained through standardized anatomical assessment procedures, which may include appropriate physical anthropometric or imaging-based methods depending on the study setting. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to determine significant differences or associations. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the latissimus dorsi muscle among the participants. Information on the morphological characteristics of the latissimus dorsi may support anatomical education, interpretation of imaging findings, surgical planning, muscle flap procedures, and understanding of individual anatomical differences. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the latissimus dorsi muscle among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when assessing the muscle and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphological characteristics and anatomical variability.
