Morphological Variation of the Levator Ani Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the levator ani muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical configuration, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The levator ani forms a major component of the pelvic floor and consists primarily of the puborectalis, pubococcygeus, and iliococcygeus portions. It plays an important role in supporting the pelvic organs, maintaining continence, stabilizing the pelvic floor, and contributing to normal pelvic and abdominal functions. Understanding its morphological characteristics is important for appreciating anatomical variation and for supporting the clinical assessment of pelvic floor structures. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the levator ani muscle among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the configuration and shape of the muscle, determining selected muscular dimensions, documenting differences in the relative characteristics of its major components, and examining bilateral variations in its morphology where applicable. The study will also assess selected anatomical relationships between the levator ani and relevant structures of the pelvic floor. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the levator ani muscle will be obtained using standardized imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures, depending on the method available for the study. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to determine significant differences or associations among selected anatomical characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the levator ani muscle among the participants. Differences may be observed in the configuration, dimensions, relative characteristics of the puborectalis, pubococcygeus, and iliococcygeus portions, and bilateral features of the muscle. Some measurements may demonstrate statistically significant differences between the right and left sides or among selected morphological characteristics. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the levator ani exhibits measurable anatomical variability among undergraduate students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, physiotherapists, obstetric and gynaecological practitioners, colorectal surgeons, urologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the pelvic floor. Information on the morphological characteristics of the levator ani may support anatomical education, interpretation of pelvic imaging, understanding of pelvic floor structure, and planning of clinical procedures involving the pelvic region. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the levator ani muscle among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the muscle and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphology, dimensions, and anatomical variability.
