Morphological Variation of the Plantaris Muscle Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the plantaris muscle among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its presence, size, shape, origin, course, and tendon configuration. The plantaris is a small muscle located in the posterior compartment of the leg and contributes to plantar flexion of the foot and flexion of the knee. Although relatively small, its anatomical variation is of clinical and anatomical interest because of its relationship with surrounding structures and the potential use of its tendon in reconstructive procedures. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the plantaris muscle among young adults and document the different patterns of variation observed. The specific objectives will include determining the presence or absence of the muscle, identifying variations in its origin and muscle belly configuration, assessing differences in its tendon characteristics and course, and comparing the observed morphology between the right and left lower limbs where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. The plantaris muscle will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate clinical examination, imaging, or osteological procedures depending on the method of assessment. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the plantaris muscle among the participants. Variations may be observed in its presence, muscle belly size and shape, origin, tendon length, and course, with possible differences between the right and left sides. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the plantaris exhibits considerable anatomical variability, although the frequency and extent of individual variations will depend on the characteristics of the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, sports medicine practitioners, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the lower limb. Knowledge of plantaris muscle morphology may assist in the interpretation of imaging findings and the differentiation of plantaris-related structures from other tissues in the posterior leg. Its tendon may also have relevance in selected reconstructive procedures, making knowledge of its anatomical characteristics clinically useful. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the plantaris muscle among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating plantaris muscle morphology, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data on this variable muscle.
