Morphological Variation of the Superficial Palmar Arch Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the superficial palmar arch among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, configuration, arterial composition, course, and distribution within the palm. The superficial palmar arch is an important arterial network of the hand that contributes significantly to the blood supply of the palm and digits. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics and variations is important for understanding normal vascular anatomy and for supporting clinical procedures involving the hand and wrist. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the superficial palmar arch among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the superficial palmar arch, documenting variations in its arterial contributors, assessing differences in its course and configuration, determining the frequency of the observed patterns, and comparing the morphological characteristics between the right and left hands where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the superficial palmar arch will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the superficial palmar arch among the participants. Variations may be observed in its shape, configuration, arterial contributions, course, and distribution to the palmar and digital regions. Differences between the right and left hands may also be identified, with some morphological characteristics potentially showing statistically significant side-related variation. These findings are expected to demonstrate the anatomical diversity of the superficial palmar arterial network. The findings will be useful to anatomists, vascular surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, hand surgeons, radiologists, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting vascular imaging, planning hand and wrist procedures, understanding variations in palmar blood supply, and reducing the risk of vascular injury during surgical or interventional procedures involving the hand. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the superficial palmar arch among undergraduate students. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in the morphology and arterial composition of the superficial palmar arch be considered during anatomical, radiological, and clinical assessment of the hand, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on palmar vascular anatomy.
