Morphological Variation of the Thyroid Cartilage Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the thyroid cartilage among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The thyroid cartilage is the largest cartilage of the laryngeal skeleton and forms an important part of the anterior and lateral walls of the larynx. It contributes to the protection of the vocal folds and participates in the structural framework required for phonation and airway function. Understanding its morphological characteristics is important for appreciating normal anatomical variation within the larynx and neck region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the thyroid cartilage among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the cartilage, determining selected dimensions such as height and breadth, documenting differences in the superior and inferior horns and other relevant anatomical features, and examining bilateral variations where applicable. The study will also assess selected anatomical relationships between the thyroid cartilage and relevant structures of the laryngeal region. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the thyroid cartilage will be obtained using standardized imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures, depending on the method available for the study. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to determine significant differences or associations among selected morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the thyroid cartilage among the participants. Differences may be observed in cartilage height, breadth, configuration of the laminae, superior and inferior horns, and other selected structural characteristics. Some measurements may demonstrate statistically significant differences between the right and left sides or among selected morphological features, while other characteristics may show considerable similarity. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the thyroid cartilage exhibits measurable anatomical variability among undergraduate students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, otolaryngologists, radiologists, speech and language professionals, head and neck surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the larynx and upper airway. Information on the morphology of the thyroid cartilage may support anatomical education, interpretation of imaging findings, assessment of laryngeal structures, understanding of phonatory anatomy, and planning of clinical procedures involving the laryngeal region. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the thyroid cartilage among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the cartilage and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphology, dimensions, and structural variability.
