Morphological Variation of the Trapezius Muscle Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the trapezius muscle among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, configuration, and anatomical relationships. The trapezius is a large superficial muscle of the posterior neck and upper back that contributes to movements and stabilization of the scapula and shoulder girdle, including elevation, retraction, depression, and upward rotation of the scapula. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding individual anatomical variation and for supporting clinical assessment of the neck, shoulder, and upper back regions. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the trapezius muscle using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the muscle, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting differences in its upper, middle, and lower portions, and assessing bilateral variations in its morphology where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adult participants or suitable anatomical specimens or imaging records will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the trapezius muscle will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the trapezius muscle, including variations in its overall configuration, dimensions, and the relative characteristics of its upper, middle, and lower portions. Bilateral differences may also be observed in some of the assessed measurements, with selected characteristics potentially showing statistically significant variation between the right and left sides.
