Morphological Variation of the Ulnar Artery Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the ulnar artery among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its size, course, branching pattern, configuration, and anatomical relationships within the forearm and hand. The ulnar artery is one of the major arteries of the upper limb and contributes significantly to the blood supply of the forearm, wrist, and hand, including the formation of the superficial palmar arch. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics and variations is important for understanding normal vascular anatomy and supporting clinical procedures involving the upper limb. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the ulnar artery among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining selected dimensions of the artery, identifying variations in its course and branching pattern, documenting differences in its anatomical configuration and relationships with surrounding structures, and comparing the observed morphological characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the ulnar artery will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology of the ulnar artery among the participants. Differences may be observed in arterial dimensions, course, branching pattern, and relationships with surrounding muscles and other anatomical structures. Bilateral differences may also be identified, with some measurements or morphological characteristics potentially showing statistically significant variation between the right and left sides. These findings are expected to demonstrate the presence of normal anatomical diversity in the morphology of the ulnar artery. The findings will be useful to anatomists, vascular surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, hand surgeons, radiologists, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting vascular imaging, planning vascular and reconstructive procedures, performing arterial cannulation or regional interventions, and reducing the risk of vascular injury during procedures involving the forearm, wrist, and hand. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the ulnar artery among undergraduate students. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in ulnar artery morphology be considered during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the upper limb, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on ulnar arterial anatomy.
