Morphological Variation of the Zygomaticofacial Foramen Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the zygomaticofacial foramen among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its anatomical characteristics, occurrence, number, shape, and location. The zygomaticofacial foramen is an important opening located on the facial surface of the zygomatic bone and transmits the zygomaticofacial nerve and accompanying vessels. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is relevant to craniofacial anatomy because variations in its position and number may have implications for maxillofacial procedures, regional anaesthesia, surgical approaches, and interpretation of cranial anatomical structures. The study will aim to assess the morphological characteristics of the zygomaticofacial foramen among undergraduate students and determine variations in its number, shape, size, and position. It will also document the frequency of single and multiple foramina and assess their relationship with selected anatomical landmarks of the zygomatic bone. The study will provide information on individual anatomical variation in the morphology and distribution of the zygomaticofacial foramen. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The zygomaticofacial foramen will be assessed using suitable standardized imaging or osteological procedures, with measurements taken in relation to relevant anatomical landmarks of the zygomatic bone. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be applied where necessary to examine differences in morphological patterns. The study is expected to reveal variations in the number, shape, size, and location of the zygomaticofacial foramen among the participants. Single and multiple foramina may occur with varying frequencies, while differences may also be observed in their spatial relationships with selected zygomatic landmarks. The findings are expected to provide useful information on the morphological diversity of the zygomaticofacial foramen within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, dentists, radiologists, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in craniofacial assessment and procedures. Knowledge of zygomaticofacial foramen variation may assist in anatomical identification, radiological interpretation, surgical planning, and avoidance of injury to the zygomaticofacial neurovascular structures. The findings may also serve as reference information for anatomical education and future craniofacial research. The study will conclude by providing information on the morphological variation of the zygomaticofacial foramen among undergraduate students. It will recommend consideration of individual anatomical differences when evaluating the zygomatic bone during clinical, surgical, radiological, and anatomical procedures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations and standardized imaging or osteological methods will also be recommended to establish broader reference data on zygomaticofacial foramen morphology.
