Morphometric Assessment of the Middle Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphometric characteristics of the middle pharyngeal constrictor muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on selected measurements of its length, width, thickness, and overall dimensions. The middle pharyngeal constrictor is a muscular component of the pharyngeal wall that contributes to the coordinated contraction of the pharynx during swallowing. Its anatomical relationships with the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, and surrounding pharyngeal structures make knowledge of its dimensions important for understanding normal pharyngeal anatomy and for clinical procedures involving the upper aerodigestive tract. The study will determine selected morphometric parameters of the middle pharyngeal constrictor muscle among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include measuring its length, width, and thickness, determining the mean and range of the observed measurements, assessing variations in its dimensions within the study population, and comparing the measurements between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Measurements of the middle pharyngeal constrictor muscle will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or dissection procedures where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to assess side-related differences and other relevant comparisons. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the dimensions of the middle pharyngeal constrictor muscle among the undergraduate students studied. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measurement procedures be used when assessing the muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference values and improve understanding of its anatomical variability.
