Morphometric Assessment of the Obturator Externus Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphometric characteristics of the obturator externus muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its measurable dimensions and anatomical variation. The obturator externus is a deep muscle of the hip region that arises from the external surface of the obturator membrane and surrounding margins of the obturator foramen before passing laterally to attach to the femur. Its anatomical characteristics are important for understanding hip movement, joint stability, and the arrangement of structures within the deep gluteal and pelvic regions. The study will assess selected morphometric parameters of the obturator externus muscle using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measurement procedures. The specific objectives will include determining the length, width, and thickness of the muscle, establishing the mean and range of the measured dimensions, documenting variations in its morphology and attachment, and comparing the observed measurements between the right and left sides where applicable. The study will also assess the pattern of variation in the measured parameters among the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Measurements of the obturator externus muscle will be obtained through standardized anatomical, imaging-based, or osteological procedures using appropriate anatomical landmarks and instruments.
