Morphometric Assessment of the Transversus Thoracis Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphometric characteristics of the transversus thoracis muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its measurable dimensions and anatomical variation. The transversus thoracis is a thin muscle located on the inner surface of the anterior thoracic wall, extending from the posterior surface of the sternum and xiphoid process to the internal surfaces of the costal cartilages of the upper ribs. Its anatomical characteristics are important for understanding the structure of the thoracic wall and its relationship with respiratory movements and adjacent intrathoracic structures. The study will assess selected morphometric parameters of the transversus thoracis muscle using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measurement procedures. The specific objectives will include determining the length, width, and thickness of the muscle, establishing the mean and range of the measured dimensions, documenting variations in its morphology and attachment, and comparing the observed measurements between the right and left sides where applicable. The study will also assess variations in the dimensions and arrangement of the muscle across its different attachments to the costal cartilages. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed.
