Prevalence of Xiphoid Process Morphological Variations Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the prevalence of morphological variations of the xiphoid process among undergraduate students. The xiphoid process is the inferior part of the sternum and represents an important anatomical landmark within the anterior thoracic region. Its morphology may vary considerably in shape, size, orientation, and degree of ossification, with variations occurring as part of normal anatomical diversity. Knowledge of these variations is important because the xiphoid process is used as a surface landmark during clinical examination and may be relevant to radiological interpretation, surgical procedures, and procedures involving the anterior thoracic and upper abdominal regions. The study aims to determine the prevalence and morphological patterns of xiphoid process variations among undergraduate students. It will specifically identify the different morphological forms of the xiphoid process and determine their frequency and distribution within the study population. The study will also document selected dimensions and structural characteristics associated with the identified morphological patterns. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The morphology of the xiphoid process will be assessed using standardized anatomical examination and appropriate imaging-based procedures where required, with selected dimensions obtained using defined anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine relevant differences in the distribution of the identified morphological patterns. The study is expected to reveal the presence of different morphological patterns of the xiphoid process among the participants. Variations may be observed in features such as shape, length, orientation, width, and degree of ossification, with some morphological forms occurring more frequently than others. The findings are also expected to provide information on the prevalence and distribution of these variations within the study population. The findings are expected to provide useful anatomical reference information for anatomists, radiologists, surgeons, emergency healthcare practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the thoracic region. It will recommend the use of standardized anatomical and imaging assessment procedures in future investigations and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to establish broader population-specific reference data on xiphoid process morphology.
