Relationship Between Anatomical Visualization Ability and Practical Anatomy Performance
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between anatomical visualization ability and practical anatomy performance among undergraduate students, with emphasis on how the ability to mentally visualize, interpret, and manipulate anatomical structures may influence practical identification and understanding. Anatomical visualization involves the ability to form and interpret three-dimensional representations of structures, their positions, orientations, and spatial relationships. This ability is important in practical anatomy because students are often required to recognize structures from different views, specimens, models, diagrams, and other learning materials. The study will assess the level of anatomical visualization ability among students and determine their practical anatomy performance. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ ability to visualize anatomical structures in three-dimensional space, determining their performance in practical identification of anatomical structures, examining the relationship between visualization ability and practical anatomy performance, and identifying areas of practical anatomy in which students with varying levels of visualization ability may experience difficulty. The study will also examine students’ ability to interpret anatomical orientation and spatial relationships during practical tasks. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using standardized spatial or anatomical visualization tasks and a structured practical anatomy assessment involving specimens, models, diagrams, or anatomical images. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be used to determine the relationship between anatomical visualization ability and practical anatomy performance. The study is expected to reveal a positive relationship between anatomical visualization ability and practical anatomy performance. Students with stronger visualization abilities may demonstrate better recognition of anatomical structures, interpretation of spatial relationships, and orientation of structures from different perspectives. However, structures that are small, deeply located, closely related, or difficult to distinguish in three-dimensional space may remain challenging for some students regardless of their visualization ability. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and health science educators involved in practical anatomy teaching. The study may provide useful information on the importance of visual-spatial skills in practical anatomy learning and may support the development of teaching approaches that strengthen students’ ability to visualize anatomical structures. The findings may also encourage the use of three-dimensional models, anatomical specimens, interactive digital resources, and image-based learning activities to support practical anatomy education. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between anatomical visualization ability and practical anatomy performance among the study population. It is recommended that opportunities for developing anatomical visualization skills should be incorporated into practical anatomy teaching and revision activities. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are recommended to provide broader evidence on the contribution of visualization ability to practical anatomy learning and performance.
