Relationship Between Dental Arch Breadth and Palatal Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study will examine the relationship between dental arch breadth and palatal breadth among undergraduate students. Dental arch breadth represents the transverse dimension of the dental arch, while palatal breadth reflects the width of the hard palate. Understanding the relationship between these dimensions is important in describing oral and craniofacial morphology and may provide useful information on the proportional characteristics of the dental arch and palate. The study will determine the dental arch breadth of the participants using standardized dental landmarks and appropriate intraoral measurement procedures. Palatal breadth will also be assessed using suitable anatomical landmarks and standardized intraoral techniques. The study will further assess the extent of variation in both dimensions and determine whether differences in dental arch breadth are associated with corresponding differences in palatal breadth. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who satisfy the established inclusion criteria will be selected through an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be obtained through direct intraoral measurements using calibrated instruments and standardized procedures to promote accuracy and consistency. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be employed to determine the relationship between dental arch breadth and palatal breadth. The study is expected to reveal measurable variations in dental arch breadth and palatal breadth among the undergraduate students. A positive or negative association may be observed between the two dimensions, indicating the degree to which transverse dental arch characteristics correspond with palatal width. The findings will provide quantitative information on the relationship between these oral anatomical dimensions without implying a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dental practitioners, orthodontists, and other professionals involved in oral and craniofacial assessment. The study may contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between dental arch morphology and palatal dimensions among young adults. It may also provide reference information for future research involving dental arch development, palatal morphology, orthodontic assessment, and dental anthropometry. The study will conclude by establishing the observed relationship between dental arch breadth and palatal breadth among the selected undergraduate students. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations will also be recommended to provide additional comparative information on dental arch and palatal morphology.
