Relationship Between Fingerprint Pattern Types and Hand Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study will examine the relationship between fingerprint pattern types and hand dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variations in dermatoglyphic patterns are associated with differences in selected hand measurements. Fingerprint patterns are stable anatomical characteristics formed during fetal development and are commonly classified into major types such as loops, whorls, and arches. Hand dimensions, including hand length and breadth, provide measurable indicators of hand morphology and body proportions. The study will focus on identifying the dominant fingerprint pattern types among the participants and measuring selected hand dimensions. Fingerprint impressions will be obtained from the fingers of the participants and classified according to established dermatoglyphic criteria. Hand length and hand breadth will also be measured using standardized anatomical landmarks and procedures to determine whether differences in hand dimensions correspond with variations in fingerprint pattern types. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Fingerprint impressions will be collected using suitable fingerprint recording materials, while hand dimensions will be obtained using appropriate anthropometric instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or comparative statistical techniques will be applied to examine the relationship between fingerprint pattern types and hand dimensions. The study is expected to reveal variations in hand dimensions across the different fingerprint pattern categories. It is also expected to determine whether a statistically significant association exists between specific fingerprint pattern types and selected hand measurements among the participants. The findings may provide useful information on the relationship between dermatoglyphic characteristics and external hand morphology. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, forensic scientists, and researchers involved in dermatoglyphic and anthropometric studies. The information may contribute to reference data on fingerprint characteristics and hand dimensions among young adults and support comparative studies of human morphological variation. It may also provide additional information for research involving forensic identification and population-based anatomical studies. The study will conclude by providing information on the relationship between fingerprint pattern types and hand dimensions among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized procedures for fingerprint classification and anthropometric measurement in future studies and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to further examine associations between dermatoglyphic characteristics and hand morphology.
