Relationship Between Frontal Sinus Dimensions and Cranial Measurements Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between frontal sinus dimensions and cranial measurements among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the morphological characteristics of the frontal bone and paranasal sinus. The frontal sinus is an air-filled cavity located within the frontal bone and exhibits considerable variation in size and configuration among individuals. Understanding its dimensions in relation to cranial measurements is relevant to craniofacial anatomy, radiology, forensic anthropology, neurosurgery, and the assessment of individual anatomical variation. The study aims to determine the dimensions of the frontal sinus and selected cranial measurements among undergraduate students. It will also assess the relationship between frontal sinus dimensions and cranial measurements and determine whether measurable associations exist between the selected anatomical parameters. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, while standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures will be used to obtain the required cranial measurements. Frontal sinus dimensions will be assessed using appropriate radiological imaging procedures, while cranial measurements will be obtained using standardized anthropometric or imaging-based techniques. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationships between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in frontal sinus dimensions and cranial measurements among the participants. A measurable relationship is also expected between selected frontal sinus dimensions and cranial measurements, although the strength and direction of the associations may vary among individuals. The findings are expected to provide useful information on the morphological relationship between the frontal sinus and overall cranial dimensions. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, forensic anthropologists, dentists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the evaluation of craniofacial structures. The study may provide reference information that can support radiological interpretation, anatomical assessment, forensic identification, and planning of procedures involving the frontal sinus and surrounding cranial structures. The study concludes that investigating the relationship between frontal sinus dimensions and cranial measurements can contribute to a better understanding of individual variation in cranial morphology. It is recommended that standardized imaging and measurement procedures be maintained in future studies and that larger and more diverse populations be investigated to establish broader anatomical reference data on frontal sinus and cranial dimensions.
