Relationship Between Infraorbital Foramen Position and Maxillary Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between infraorbital foramen position and maxillary dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the anatomical association between the location of the infraorbital foramen and selected dimensions of the maxilla. The infraorbital foramen is an important opening on the anterior surface of the maxilla that transmits the infraorbital nerve and associated vessels. Knowledge of its position in relation to surrounding maxillary structures is important for understanding facial anatomy and supporting clinical procedures involving the midface. The study will determine the position of the infraorbital foramen in relation to standardized anatomical landmarks and assess selected maxillary dimensions among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include measuring relevant maxillary dimensions, determining the position of the infraorbital foramen, assessing right and left side differences where applicable, and examining the relationship between infraorbital foramen position and the measured maxillary dimensions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable cranial imaging or osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Measurements will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological procedures. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be used to examine relationships between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the position of the infraorbital foramen and selected maxillary dimensions among the study population. A statistically significant relationship may be observed between specific aspects of infraorbital foramen position and maxillary measurements. Bilateral differences may also be identified where applicable, providing useful information on the anatomical variability of the infraorbital region. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the midfacial region. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding the anatomical position of the infraorbital foramen and its relationship with surrounding maxillary structures, particularly in radiological interpretation, regional anaesthesia, and surgical procedures involving the midface. The study will conclude by providing information on the relationship between infraorbital foramen position and maxillary dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based measurement procedures be maintained when assessing the infraorbital region, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
