Relationship Between Intercostal Muscle Dimensions and Thoracic Circumference Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between intercostal muscle dimensions and thoracic circumference among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variations in the dimensions of the intercostal muscles are associated with differences in thoracic circumference. The intercostal muscles occupy the spaces between adjacent ribs and form an important component of the thoracic wall. They contribute to movements of the ribs during respiration and assist in maintaining the structural integrity of the thoracic cage. Understanding the relationship between their dimensions and thoracic circumference may provide useful information on the anatomical characteristics of the thoracic wall. The study will determine selected dimensions of the intercostal muscles and assess their relationship with thoracic circumference among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include measuring selected intercostal muscle dimensions, determining the thoracic circumference of the participants, examining the relationship between the muscle measurements and thoracic circumference, and identifying whether significant associations exist between the selected anatomical measurements. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Intercostal muscle dimensions will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging-based measurement procedures, while thoracic circumference will be measured using standardized anthropometric procedures at an appropriate thoracic landmark. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis and appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine the strength and significance of the observed relationships. The study is expected to reveal measurable relationships between selected intercostal muscle dimensions and thoracic circumference among the participants. Some muscle measurements may demonstrate positive associations with thoracic circumference, while others may show weak or statistically non-significant relationships. Differences may also be observed among selected intercostal spaces or between the right and left sides.
