Relationship Between Jaw Function and Cervical Posture Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between jaw function and cervical posture among young adults, with emphasis on the association between functional jaw movements and the alignment and positioning of the cervical region. The jaw and cervical spine are anatomically and functionally connected through muscles, joints, and postural mechanisms that contribute to coordinated head and neck movement. Understanding the relationship between jaw function and cervical posture may provide useful information on normal craniofacial and cervical musculoskeletal function among young adults. The study will assess jaw function and cervical posture among young adults using standardized clinical, functional, and postural assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining the functional characteristics of jaw movement, assessing cervical posture, evaluating selected measures of jaw function such as range of mandibular movement where applicable, and determining the relationship between jaw function and selected cervical postural parameters. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Jaw function will be assessed using standardized procedures for evaluating mandibular movement and function, while cervical posture will be assessed using appropriate postural and alignment assessment methods. Data obtained from the assessments will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between the study variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in jaw function and cervical posture among the participants. A significant relationship may be observed between selected measures of jaw function and cervical postural parameters, with differences potentially occurring in individuals with varying patterns of mandibular movement and cervical alignment. The findings will describe the observed association between the variables without establishing a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, dentists, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial practitioners, rehabilitation specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of craniofacial and cervical function. Information obtained from the study may contribute to a better understanding of the functional relationship between the jaw and cervical region and may support the assessment of posture and movement during clinical and functional evaluations. The study will conclude by documenting the relationship between jaw function and cervical posture among the study population. It is recommended that standardized procedures be used when assessing mandibular function and cervical posture, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to provide broader reference information on jaw mobility, cervical alignment, and cranio-cervical functional relationships.
