Relationship Between Maxillary Arch Breadth and Facial Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study will examine the relationship between maxillary arch breadth and facial breadth among undergraduate students. Maxillary arch breadth represents the transverse width of the upper dental arch, while facial breadth reflects the transverse dimension of the face. Understanding the relationship between these dimensions is important in describing dental and craniofacial morphology and in assessing proportional characteristics of the upper dental arch and face among young adults. The study will determine the maxillary arch breadth of the participants using standardized dental landmarks and appropriate intraoral measurement procedures. Facial breadth will also be assessed using suitable facial anthropometric landmarks and standardized techniques. The study will further assess the variation in both dimensions and determine the degree of association between maxillary arch breadth and facial breadth among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through standardized dental and facial anthropometric measurements using suitable calibrated instruments and consistent procedures. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be employed to determine the relationship between maxillary arch breadth and facial breadth. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in maxillary arch breadth and facial breadth among the undergraduate students. A significant correlation may be observed between the two dimensions, indicating the extent to which variations in facial breadth correspond with differences in the transverse width of the maxillary dental arch. The findings are expected to provide quantitative information on the relationship between dental and facial dimensions without implying a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dental practitioners, orthodontists, and other professionals involved in dental and craniofacial assessment. The study may contribute to a better understanding of the proportional relationship between maxillary dental arch morphology and facial dimensions among young adults. It may also provide reference information for future research involving dental arch characteristics, facial anthropometry, orthodontic assessment, and craniofacial morphology. The study will conclude by establishing the observed relationship between maxillary arch breadth and facial breadth among the selected undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized dental and facial anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures to promote reliable and comparable findings. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations will also be recommended to provide broader information on the relationship between maxillary arch and facial dimensions.
