Relationship Between Nasal Length and Nasal Base Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between nasal length and nasal base breadth among undergraduate students, focusing on the extent to which these two external nasal dimensions vary together. Nasal dimensions are important components of facial anthropometry and provide useful information about individual anatomical variation. Understanding the relationship between nasal length and nasal base breadth may contribute to the documentation of normal external nasal morphology and provide reference information for anatomical and anthropometric studies. The study will determine the nasal length and nasal base breadth of undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and direct anthropometric measurement procedures. Nasal length will be measured from the appropriate superior nasal landmark to the most inferior point of the nose, while nasal base breadth will be determined across the widest portion of the nasal base. The study will also examine the distribution of the measurements and establish the degree of association between the two nasal dimensions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through direct observation and standardized anthropometric measurements using suitable measuring instruments, with participants positioned consistently during measurement. The data obtained will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be applied to determine the relationship between nasal length and nasal base breadth. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in nasal length and nasal base breadth among the undergraduate students. A measurable association may be observed between the two dimensions, indicating the extent to which differences in nasal length correspond with differences in nasal base breadth within the study population. The findings are expected to provide useful descriptive information on the dimensional characteristics of the external nose among young adults. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, forensic practitioners, clinicians, and researchers involved in facial anthropometry and external nasal morphology. The information may provide reference data for comparative anatomical studies and contribute to understanding normal variation in nasal dimensions. It may also be useful in studies involving facial identification, reconstructive procedures, and assessment of facial proportions. The study will conclude by establishing the nature of the relationship between nasal length and nasal base breadth among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures be maintained when assessing external nasal dimensions to improve reliability and comparability. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations is recommended to provide broader reference data on the relationship between different nasal dimensions.
