Relationship Between Plantaris Muscle Length and Leg Length Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between plantaris muscle length and leg length among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variation in plantaris muscle length is associated with differences in overall leg length. The plantaris is a small, slender muscle located in the posterior compartment of the leg and contributes to plantar flexion of the foot and flexion of the knee. Its anatomical dimensions and relationship with surrounding structures are of interest in anatomical, clinical, and musculoskeletal studies. The study will determine the length of the plantaris muscle and leg length among undergraduate students and assess the relationship between the two measurements. The specific objectives will include measuring plantaris muscle length, determining leg length, comparing the measurements between the right and left lower limbs where applicable, and establishing the strength and direction of the relationship between plantaris muscle length and leg length. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Plantaris muscle length will be assessed using appropriate standardized anatomical or imaging-based measurement procedures, while leg length will be obtained using standardized anthropometric landmarks and measurement techniques. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in plantaris muscle length and leg length among the participants. A positive or otherwise measurable association may be observed between plantaris muscle length and leg length, although the strength and statistical significance of the relationship will depend on the characteristics of the study population. Differences between the right and left lower limbs may also be observed where bilateral measurements are assessed. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, sports medicine practitioners, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the lower limb. The study may provide useful reference information on plantaris muscle dimensions in relation to leg length and contribute to a better understanding of anatomical variation in the posterior compartment of the leg. The findings may also support anatomical and clinical assessment of structures around the knee and ankle. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions of the plantaris muscle and leg length and determining their relationship among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical, imaging, and anthropometric procedures be used when assessing plantaris muscle and leg dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data.
