Relationship Between Radiological Anatomy Exposure and Interpretation of Medical Images
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between radiological anatomy exposure and students’ ability to interpret medical images, with emphasis on how familiarity with radiological representations of anatomical structures may influence image interpretation skills. Radiological anatomy provides students with opportunities to recognize anatomical structures in different imaging planes and modalities, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound. Adequate exposure to radiological anatomy may therefore support students’ understanding of internal structures, spatial relationships, and anatomical orientation in clinical images. The study will assess students’ exposure to radiological anatomy and their ability to interpret selected medical images. The specific objectives will include determining the level and frequency of students’ exposure to radiological anatomy resources, assessing their ability to identify anatomical structures on medical images, examining the relationship between radiological anatomy exposure and image interpretation performance, and identifying types of anatomical structures or imaging views that present greater difficulty during interpretation. The study will also assess students’ familiarity with different radiological planes and anatomical orientations. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire on radiological anatomy exposure and a standardized medical image interpretation assessment involving selected computed tomography, magnetic resonance, ultrasound, or other appropriate anatomical images. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be applied to determine the relationship between radiological anatomy exposure and image interpretation performance. The study is expected to reveal a positive relationship between radiological anatomy exposure and students’ ability to interpret medical images. Students with greater and more consistent exposure may demonstrate better recognition of anatomical structures, orientation, sectional relationships, and spatial arrangement on medical images. However, complex images, unfamiliar planes, overlapping structures, and small or closely related anatomical features may remain challenging for some students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, medical imaging educators, curriculum planners, and other health science educators involved in anatomy and image-based learning. The study may provide useful evidence on the value of integrating radiological anatomy into undergraduate anatomy education and may support greater use of authentic medical images in teaching and revision. It may also help strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between conventional anatomical knowledge and its appearance in clinical imaging. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between radiological anatomy exposure and medical image interpretation among the study population. It is recommended that radiological anatomy should be appropriately incorporated into undergraduate anatomy teaching through regular exposure to relevant medical images and guided interpretation activities. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different imaging modalities are recommended to provide broader evidence on the development of radiological anatomy and medical image interpretation skills.
