Relationship Between Shoulder-to-Hip Ratio and Body Height Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study will examine the relationship between shoulder-to-hip ratio and body height among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variation in body height is associated with differences in the proportional relationship between shoulder and hip breadth. The shoulder-to-hip ratio is an anthropometric indicator of body proportions, while body height is an important measure of overall stature. Examining these measurements may provide useful information on variation in body proportions among young adults. The study will determine shoulder breadth, hip breadth, and body height among selected undergraduate students. Shoulder-to-hip ratio will be calculated from the measured shoulder and hip breadths, while body height will be obtained using a standardized standing height measurement. The study will subsequently examine the relationship between the calculated shoulder-to-hip ratio and body height among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and the required measurements will be obtained using standardized anthropometric procedures and suitable instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation technique will be used to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between shoulder-to-hip ratio and body height. The study is expected to reveal variation in shoulder-to-hip ratio and body height among the participants. The findings are also expected to determine whether a measurable relationship exists between the two variables and establish the strength and direction of any observed association. The results may provide useful information on the proportional relationship between upper and lower body breadth and overall stature. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, physiotherapists, ergonomists, clothing and apparel researchers, and other professionals interested in human body proportions and anthropometric variation. The study may also provide reference information for ergonomic design, clothing design, physical assessment, and further research involving body proportions among young adults. The study will conclude by providing information on the relationship between shoulder-to-hip ratio and body height among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized anthropometric techniques for measuring body breadths and height and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference data on body proportions.
