Relationship Between Sphenoid Sinus Dimensions and Cranial Base Measurements Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between sphenoid sinus dimensions and cranial base measurements among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the anatomical characteristics of the central skull base. The sphenoid sinus is an air-filled cavity within the sphenoid bone and occupies an important position in relation to several structures of the cranial base. Understanding its dimensions and their relationship with cranial base measurements is relevant to craniofacial anatomy, radiology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, and surgical planning involving the skull base. The study aims to determine the dimensions of the sphenoid sinus and selected cranial base measurements among undergraduate students. It will also assess the relationship between sphenoid sinus dimensions and cranial base measurements and determine whether measurable associations exist between the selected anatomical parameters. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, while suitable anatomical landmarks and standardized measurement procedures will be used for the assessment. Sphenoid sinus dimensions and cranial base measurements will be obtained through appropriate radiological or anatomical imaging techniques, particularly where direct external measurement is not possible. The data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in sphenoid sinus dimensions and cranial base measurements among the participants. A measurable relationship is also expected between selected sphenoid sinus dimensions and cranial base measurements, although the strength and direction of the associations may vary among individuals. The findings are expected to provide useful information on the anatomical relationship between the sphenoid sinus and surrounding cranial base structures. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, dental professionals, and other healthcare practitioners involved in the evaluation and management of skull-base structures. The study may provide reference information that can support radiological interpretation, anatomical assessment, and preoperative planning for procedures involving the sphenoid sinus and cranial base. The study concludes that investigating the relationship between sphenoid sinus dimensions and cranial base measurements can contribute to a better understanding of anatomical variation within the skull base. It is recommended that standardized imaging and measurement procedures be maintained in future studies and that larger and more diverse populations be investigated to establish broader anatomical reference data.
