Relationship Between Supraorbital Foramen Position and Orbital Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between supraorbital foramen position and orbital dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the anatomical association between the location of the supraorbital foramen and selected measurements of the orbit. The supraorbital foramen is an important anatomical opening located along the superior orbital margin through which the supraorbital nerve and associated vessels pass. Understanding its position in relation to orbital structures is important for studying craniofacial anatomy and may support clinical procedures involving the orbit and surrounding regions. The study will determine the position of the supraorbital foramen in relation to standardized orbital landmarks and assess selected orbital dimensions among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include measuring relevant orbital dimensions, determining the position of the supraorbital foramen, assessing right and left side differences where applicable, and examining the relationship between supraorbital foramen position and the measured orbital dimensions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable cranial imaging or osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Measurements will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be used to examine relationships between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the position of the supraorbital foramen and selected orbital dimensions among the study population. A statistically significant relationship may be observed between specific aspects of supraorbital foramen position and orbital measurements. Bilateral differences may also be identified where applicable, providing useful information on the anatomical variability of the supraorbital and orbital regions. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, ophthalmologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, neurologists, and forensic anthropologists involved in the assessment and management of the craniofacial region. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding the anatomical position of the supraorbital foramen in relation to the orbit and may support radiological interpretation, regional anaesthesia, surgical planning, and procedures involving the orbital region. The study will conclude by providing information on the relationship between supraorbital foramen position and orbital dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based measurement procedures be maintained when assessing the supraorbital and orbital regions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
