Sexual Dimorphism in Tibial Nutrient Foramen Location Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in the location of the tibial nutrient foramen among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the position of the nutrient foramen between male and female tibiae. The nutrient foramen is an important opening on the shaft of the tibia through which nutrient vessels enter the bone and contribute to its internal vascular supply. Knowledge of its location and anatomical variation is important in understanding tibial vascular anatomy and may be relevant to orthopedic procedures, fracture management, bone grafting, reconstructive surgery, and forensic osteological assessment. The study will assess the location of the tibial nutrient foramen and determine whether measurable differences exist between male and female specimens. The specific objectives will include identifying the position of the nutrient foramen along the tibial shaft, measuring its distance from selected anatomical landmarks, determining its location in relation to the borders and surfaces of the tibia, and comparing the observed measurements between male and female specimens. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of tibial bones or suitable osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on the location and measurements of the nutrient foramen will be obtained through direct osteological examination using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measuring instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group inferential tests will be applied to determine significant differences between male and female specimens. The study is expected to reveal variation in the location of the tibial nutrient foramen among the specimens studied. Differences may be observed between male and female specimens in selected measurements relating to the position of the nutrient foramen along the tibial shaft or its relationship with specific anatomical landmarks. However, some measurements may demonstrate considerable overlap between the groups, reflecting individual anatomical variation within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the tibia and procedures involving its shaft. The study may provide reference information on the anatomical location of the tibial nutrient foramen and contribute to understanding sex-related variation in tibial osteology. The findings may also support surgical planning, interpretation of anatomical variations, and forensic assessment of skeletal remains. The study will conclude by documenting the location and pattern of sexual variation in the tibial nutrient foramen among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized osteological measurement procedures be used when assessing the location of the tibial nutrient foramen and that further studies involving larger and more diverse skeletal samples be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
