THE COMPARATIVE EFFECT OF MYRISTICA FRAGANS (NUTMEG) AND AFRAMOMUM MELEGUETA (ALLIGATOR PEPPER) ON DEMESTES MACULATUS DEGEER

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The increasing challenge of pest management in agriculture has prompted the exploration of various natural alternatives to synthetic chemicals. One area of interest is the use of plant extracts as biopesticides. Among these, Myristica fragrans (nutmeg) and Aframomum melegueta (alligator pepper) have shown promise due to their bioactive compounds. Myristica fragrans, commonly known as nutmeg, is a tropical spice obtained from the seed of Myristica fragrans. It is renowned not only for its culinary applications but also for its medicinal properties (Abubakar et al., 2021). Nutmeg contains compounds such as myristicin and eugenol, which have demonstrated antimicrobial and insecticidal activities (Saeed et al., 2019). Similarly, Aframomum melegueta, often referred to as alligator pepper, is another spice with significant biological activity. It is noted for its essential oils and phytochemicals, including flavonoids and saponins, which contribute to its insecticidal properties (Odeyemi et al., 2020).

Demestes maculatus DeGeer, a species of dermestid beetle, is a notorious pest in stored products, particularly affecting grains and seeds (Owolabi et al., 2018). This beetle's larvae can cause considerable damage to stored agricultural products, leading to substantial economic losses. Effective management of Demestes maculatus often relies on chemical insecticides, which pose environmental and health risks. Therefore, there is a growing interest in evaluating natural and less toxic alternatives for pest control (Akinmoladun et al., 2022).

This study seeks to compare the efficacy of Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta extracts in controlling Demestes maculatus. The comparison aims to identify which of these natural extracts is more effective in managing this pest, potentially providing a safer and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic insecticides. Prior research has shown the potential of plant extracts in pest management, but a comparative analysis between these specific plant extracts has not been extensively documented (Nwabuisi et al., 2023). By focusing on Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta, this study hopes to contribute valuable insights into their effectiveness and potential application in integrated pest management strategies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The persistent challenge of managing Demestes maculatus in stored agricultural products has led to a reliance on chemical insecticides, which pose environmental and health risks. There is a need for sustainable and safer alternatives that can effectively control these pests without adverse effects. Plant extracts, particularly Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta, have demonstrated potential in pest management. However, there is limited comparative research evaluating their relative efficacy against Demestes maculatus. This study aims to address this gap by comparing the insecticidal effects of Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta on Demestes maculatus, providing insights into their potential as natural pest control agents.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the comparative effectiveness of Myristica fragrans (nutmeg) and Aframomum melegueta (alligator pepper) extracts in controlling Demestes maculatus DeGeer.

Specific objectives include:

1.    To evaluate the impact of Myristica fragrans extract on the mortality rate of Demestes maculatus.

2.    To determine the effectiveness of Aframomum melegueta extract in reducing the infestation level of Demestes maculatus.

3.    To find out which of the two plant extracts is more effective in managing Demestes maculatus.

1.4 Research Questions

1.    What is the impact of Myristica fragrans extract on the mortality rate of Demestes maculatus?

2.    What is the effectiveness of Aframomum melegueta extract in reducing the infestation level of Demestes maculatus?

3.    How does the efficacy of Myristica fragrans compare to Aframomum melegueta in managing Demestes maculatus?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I

H0: There is no significant impact of Myristica fragrans extract on the mortality rate of Demestes maculatus.

H1: There is a significant impact of Myristica fragrans extract on the mortality rate of Demestes maculatus.

Hypothesis II

H0: There is no significant effectiveness of Aframomum melegueta extract in reducing the infestation level of Demestes maculatus.

H2: There is a significant effectiveness of Aframomum melegueta extract in reducing the infestation level of Demestes maculatus.

Hypothesis III

H0: There is no significant difference in the efficacy of Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta extracts in managing Demestes maculatus.

H3: There is a significant difference in the efficacy of Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta extracts in managing Demestes maculatus.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores natural and environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic insecticides for pest management. By comparing the efficacy of Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta, it provides valuable insights into their potential use in integrated pest management strategies. This can contribute to reducing reliance on chemical pesticides, promoting sustainable agriculture, and protecting stored agricultural products from pest damage. Additionally, the findings could inform future research and practical applications in the field of pest control.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to evaluating the comparative efficacy of Myristica fragrans and Aframomum melegueta extracts in managing Demestes maculatus. The study will focus on the mortality rate of the pest and the reduction in infestation levels. It will be conducted in a controlled environment to ensure accurate measurement of the plant extracts' effects on the pest. The research will not cover other pests or plant extracts beyond those specified.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The study may face limitations such as variability in the concentration and preparation of plant extracts, which could affect the results. Additionally, the controlled environment might not fully replicate real-world conditions where other factors could influence the effectiveness of the extracts. The study's findings may also be limited to the specific strain of Demestes maculatus used and may not be generalizable to other pest species or environments.
