Comparative Study of Demonstration-Based and Written Safety Training in Anatomy Laboratories
Abstract
The study compares demonstration-based and written safety training in anatomy laboratories among undergraduate students. Safety training is an important component of anatomy laboratory education because students may encounter biological specimens, preservation chemicals, sharp instruments, dissection equipment, and other materials that require appropriate handling. While written safety instructions provide students with information that can be reviewed repeatedly, demonstration-based training allows learners to observe correct procedures and understand how safety practices are applied during practical activities. The study will therefore compare these two approaches in relation to students’ knowledge and application of anatomy laboratory safety practices. The study will assess students’ baseline knowledge of anatomy laboratory safety and determine their understanding of appropriate procedures for specimen handling, use of dissection instruments, personal protective equipment, chemical safety, waste disposal, emergency procedures, and general laboratory conduct. The demonstration-based training will involve guided practical demonstrations of relevant safety procedures, while the written training will provide structured safety information through manuals, handouts, or other written instructional materials. Students’ knowledge and ability to apply the required safety practices will be assessed after the training. A comparative quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to demonstration-based and written safety training groups. Each group will receive the designated form of safety instruction over a specified period, after which standardized knowledge assessments and practical safety observation checklists will be administered. Data obtained from the assessments will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests used to determine differences between the two training groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in students’ knowledge and practical application of anatomy laboratory safety practices following the two training approaches. Demonstration-based training may provide stronger understanding of procedures that require physical actions, sequencing, and correct handling of laboratory materials, while written training may provide students with convenient opportunities for repeated review of safety information. Both approaches may improve awareness of laboratory rules, although students may continue to experience difficulties with less frequently encountered procedures or emergency situations. The findings will be useful to anatomists, laboratory instructors, anatomy educators, academic administrators, and health science institutions by providing information on approaches that can be used to improve laboratory safety education. The findings may support the development of structured safety training programmes that combine clear written instructions with practical demonstrations where necessary. Improved safety education may also encourage appropriate specimen handling, responsible use of laboratory equipment, compliance with safety procedures, and safer participation in anatomy practical activities. The study will conclude by comparing the effectiveness of demonstration-based and written safety training in anatomy laboratories. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories provide students with clear and comprehensive safety information supported by practical demonstrations of procedures that require physical application. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the longer-term effects of different safety training approaches on students’ knowledge, compliance, and practical safety behaviour.
