Correlation of Cadaveric Dissection Findings with Cross-Sectional Imaging
Abstract
The study examines the correlation of cadaveric dissection findings with cross-sectional imaging, with emphasis on the relationship between direct anatomical observations from cadaveric specimens and the appearance of corresponding structures on sectional medical images. Cadaveric dissection provides direct visualization of anatomical structures, relationships, and spatial arrangements, while cross-sectional imaging provides internal views of the body in different anatomical planes. Correlating these two approaches may strengthen understanding of three-dimensional anatomy and improve interpretation of sectional anatomical images. The study will assess the relationship between selected anatomical findings observed during cadaveric dissection and their corresponding appearances on cross-sectional images. The specific objectives will include identifying selected structures during cadaveric dissection, identifying the same structures on appropriate cross-sectional images, comparing their anatomical position and relationships, and determining the correlation between students’ performance in cadaveric identification and cross-sectional image interpretation. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through practical cadaveric identification exercises and structured interpretation of corresponding cross-sectional images obtained from appropriate anatomical imaging resources. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify structures, recognize anatomical relationships, determine sectional levels, and relate direct anatomical findings to their imaging appearances. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation test will be used to determine the relationship between cadaveric dissection findings and cross-sectional imaging performance. The study is expected to reveal a positive relationship between students’ ability to identify anatomical structures during cadaveric dissection and their ability to recognize corresponding structures on cross-sectional images. Students who demonstrate better understanding of structures and spatial relationships during dissection may also demonstrate better interpretation of sectional images. Greater difficulties may be observed with structures that appear differently across anatomical planes, are closely related to surrounding structures, or are difficult to distinguish on imaging. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, radiographers, medical students, and other healthcare trainees involved in anatomical and imaging education. The study may provide useful information on the value of integrating cadaveric dissection with cross-sectional imaging to strengthen students’ understanding of three-dimensional anatomical relationships. It may also assist educators in developing teaching activities that help students transfer knowledge from direct anatomical observation to interpretation of internal anatomical images. The study will conclude by determining the correlation between cadaveric dissection findings and cross-sectional imaging in anatomy training. It is recommended that anatomy education should provide opportunities for students to correlate cadaveric specimens with appropriate cross-sectional images, supported by guided demonstrations and structured practical exercises. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide additional evidence on the effectiveness of integrated cadaveric and imaging-based approaches to anatomy education.
