Correlation of Three-Dimensional Visualization Skills with Cross-Sectional Anatomy Performance
Abstract
The study examines the correlation of three-dimensional visualization skills with cross-sectional anatomy performance, with emphasis on the ability of students to mentally interpret and manipulate anatomical structures in three-dimensional space. Three-dimensional visualization is an important cognitive skill in anatomy because cross-sectional images present structures as separate slices rather than as complete anatomical regions. Students with stronger visualization abilities may therefore find it easier to interpret sectional appearances, understand spatial relationships, and trace anatomical structures across different levels. The study will assess students’ three-dimensional visualization skills and their performance in cross-sectional anatomy. The specific objectives will include determining students’ level of three-dimensional visualization ability, assessing their performance in identifying and interpreting anatomical structures on cross-sectional images, determining the relationship between visualization skills and cross-sectional anatomy performance, and identifying areas of cross-sectional anatomy that present greater difficulty to students. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using an appropriate standardized three-dimensional visualization assessment and a structured cross-sectional anatomy performance test involving identification of anatomical structures, interpretation of spatial relationships, orientation across anatomical planes, and tracing of structures through serial sections. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation test will be used to determine the relationship between three-dimensional visualization skills and cross-sectional anatomy performance. The study is expected to reveal a positive relationship between students’ three-dimensional visualization skills and their performance in cross-sectional anatomy. Students with stronger visualization abilities may demonstrate better recognition of anatomical structures, interpretation of spatial relationships, orientation across sectional planes, and tracing of structures through consecutive images. Greater difficulties may be observed when students encounter complex anatomical regions, overlapping structures, unfamiliar sectional appearances, or structures whose positions change considerably across different levels. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical students, radiography students, physiotherapy students, and other healthcare trainees involved in anatomical imaging and spatial anatomy education. The study may provide useful information on the importance of three-dimensional visualization in understanding cross-sectional anatomy and may assist educators in identifying students who require additional support. It may also encourage the use of anatomical models, three-dimensional resources, serial images, and spatial learning activities to strengthen students’ understanding of sectional anatomy. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between three-dimensional visualization skills and cross-sectional anatomy performance among undergraduate students. It is recommended that anatomy teaching should provide students with regular opportunities to develop three-dimensional visualization through practical models, serial sectional images, digital anatomy resources, and guided spatial exercises. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide additional evidence on the relationship between visualization ability and performance in cross-sectional anatomy.
