Effect of Body-Surface Mapping Exercises on Students’ Anatomical Orientation
Abstract
The study examines the effect of body-surface mapping exercises on students’ anatomical orientation. Anatomical orientation is essential for understanding the position, direction, and spatial relationship of structures within the human body. Students may experience difficulty applying anatomical planes, directions, regions, and surface landmarks when learning is limited to theoretical descriptions and diagrams. Body-surface mapping exercises provide an interactive approach in which students identify and mark anatomical regions and surface landmarks on the body, allowing them to develop a clearer understanding of anatomical position and spatial orientation. The study will assess students’ baseline knowledge of anatomical orientation and determine the effect of structured body-surface mapping exercises on their ability to apply anatomical directional terms and identify relevant surface landmarks. The exercises will involve guided identification and marking of selected body regions, anatomical planes, directional relationships, surface landmarks, and positions of selected underlying structures. Students will be encouraged to relate the mapped features to standard anatomical position and to explain the spatial relationships between different body regions. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to a body-surface mapping group and a comparison group receiving conventional anatomy instruction. The intervention group will participate in structured mapping exercises under appropriate supervision, while both groups will undergo standardized assessments before and after the instructional period. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests used to determine differences in anatomical orientation performance between the groups. The study is expected to reveal improved anatomical orientation among students exposed to body-surface mapping exercises. Students may demonstrate better understanding and application of directional terms, anatomical planes, body regions, surface landmarks, and relative positions of structures. The practical and visual nature of the exercises may also strengthen students’ spatial awareness and ability to translate anatomical concepts from diagrams to the human body. However, some students may continue to experience difficulty with deeper structures, complex spatial relationships, or anatomical regions with closely related landmarks. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, academic administrators, and undergraduate students by providing information on the potential value of body-surface mapping as an interactive anatomy learning strategy. The findings may support the integration of practical mapping activities into anatomy lessons, especially during the introduction of anatomical position, planes, regions, and directional terminology. Such exercises may also provide a foundation for subsequent learning in surface anatomy, clinical examination, and applied anatomy. The study will conclude by determining the effect of body-surface mapping exercises on students’ anatomical orientation. It is recommended that structured body-surface mapping activities be incorporated into anatomy education alongside conventional instructional methods, with appropriate supervision and standardized anatomical references. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of body-surface mapping exercises in improving anatomical orientation and practical application of anatomical knowledge.
