Effect of Clinical Examination Demonstrations on Students’ Application of Surface Anatomy

Abstract

The study examines the effect of clinical examination demonstrations on students’ application of surface anatomy, with emphasis on the use of practical demonstrations to help students relate anatomical landmarks and surface features to basic clinical examination procedures. Surface anatomy provides an important foundation for understanding the location and relationships of underlying structures through external body features. Clinical examination demonstrations may therefore provide students with opportunities to observe how surface anatomical knowledge is applied during physical assessment and may strengthen the connection between theoretical anatomy and practical clinical skills. The study will assess students’ ability to apply surface anatomy knowledge before and after exposure to structured clinical examination demonstrations. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline ability to identify clinically relevant surface landmarks, demonstrating the application of these landmarks during selected clinical examination procedures, assessing students’ application of surface anatomy following the demonstrations, and comparing their performance before and after the intervention. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique and exposed to structured clinical examination demonstrations involving selected body regions and clinically relevant surface landmarks. The demonstrations will cover landmark identification, anatomical orientation, palpation where appropriate, positioning, and the relationship between external landmarks and underlying structures during basic examination procedures. Data will be collected using standardized practical assessment tools and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal improved application of surface anatomy among students following exposure to the clinical examination demonstrations. Students may demonstrate greater ability to locate relevant landmarks, relate them to underlying anatomical structures, and apply this knowledge during basic clinical examination tasks. Greater improvement may be observed in regions with prominent and easily identifiable landmarks, while deeper, less distinct, or closely related structures may continue to present practical difficulties. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, clinical skills instructors, medical students, physiotherapy students, nursing students, and other healthcare trainees involved in practical and clinical education. The study may provide useful information on the value of demonstration-based teaching in helping students transfer surface anatomy knowledge from classroom learning to practical clinical examination. It may also assist educators in identifying areas where additional demonstrations, supervised practice, feedback, models, or guided palpation activities are required. The study will conclude by determining the effect of clinical examination demonstrations on students’ application of surface anatomy. It is recommended that structured clinical examination demonstrations should be incorporated into anatomy and clinical skills teaching, with adequate opportunities for students to observe, practise, and receive feedback on the application of surface anatomical landmarks. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide broader evidence on the effectiveness of demonstration-based approaches in developing practical clinical anatomy skills.
