Effect of Layer-by-Layer Illustrations on Students’ Understanding of Regional Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of layer-by-layer illustrations on students’ understanding of regional anatomy, with emphasis on the use of sequential visual representations to demonstrate the arrangement and relationships of anatomical structures within specific body regions. Regional anatomy requires students to understand structures not only individually but also in relation to one another across different anatomical planes and depths. Layer-by-layer illustrations may provide a progressive approach to learning by allowing students to visualize superficial structures first and subsequently identify deeper structures and their spatial relationships. The study will assess students’ understanding of selected regions of the human body before and after exposure to layer-by-layer illustrations. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline understanding of regional anatomical structures, presenting selected regions using sequential illustrations, evaluating students’ understanding after the instructional intervention, and comparing students’ performance before and after exposure to the illustrations. The illustrations will present anatomical structures progressively to demonstrate their relative positions, boundaries, depth, and relationships within the selected regions. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students offering human anatomy will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to suitable study groups where applicable. Data will be collected using structured anatomy tests containing identification, labeling, spatial relationship, and regional structure questions administered before and after the intervention. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine whether observed changes in students’ performance are statistically significant. The study is expected to reveal improved understanding of regional anatomical structures among students exposed to layer-by-layer illustrations. Students are expected to demonstrate better recognition of anatomical structures, understanding of their relative positions, and ability to relate superficial structures to deeper structures within the selected regions. However, regions containing numerous closely related structures or complex spatial arrangements may remain more difficult for some students to interpret accurately. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and students by providing information on the usefulness of sequential visual illustrations in teaching regional anatomy. The approach may support classroom and practical instruction by making complex structural relationships easier to visualize and follow progressively. It may also provide an additional teaching resource for students who experience difficulty understanding the depth and spatial arrangement of structures within different anatomical regions. The study will conclude by determining the effect of layer-by-layer illustrations on students’ understanding of regional anatomy. It is recommended that sequential anatomical illustrations be incorporated into regional anatomy teaching alongside appropriate models, specimens, diagrams, and practical demonstrations. Regular opportunities for students to interpret and reconstruct anatomical relationships from layered representations should also be encouraged, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are recommended.
