Effect of Live Ultrasound Demonstration on Students’ Understanding of Regional Structures
Abstract
The study examines the effect of live ultrasound demonstration on students’ understanding of regional structures, with emphasis on the use of real-time ultrasound imaging to improve students’ recognition and interpretation of anatomical structures within selected regions of the human body. Live ultrasound provides an opportunity to observe anatomical structures dynamically and to relate sonographic appearances to their actual anatomical positions and relationships. Its integration into anatomy teaching may therefore strengthen students’ understanding of regional anatomy beyond what can be achieved through static illustrations and models alone. The study will assess students’ understanding of selected regional structures before and after exposure to live ultrasound demonstrations. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline ability to identify regional anatomical structures, demonstrating the sonographic appearance and relationships of selected structures using live ultrasound, assessing students’ understanding following the demonstrations, and comparing their performance before and after the intervention. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique and exposed to structured live ultrasound demonstrations covering selected anatomical regions. The demonstrations will involve real-time visualization of relevant structures, identification of anatomical landmarks, observation of structural relationships, and correlation of ultrasound images with anatomical models, diagrams, and conventional anatomical descriptions. Data will be collected using standardized regional anatomy assessments and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal improved understanding of regional structures among students following exposure to live ultrasound demonstrations. Students may demonstrate better recognition of structures, appreciation of their spatial relationships, and ability to relate real-time sonographic appearances to conventional anatomical representations. Greater difficulties may remain in identifying structures that are deep, small, closely related, poorly visualized, or affected by image quality and anatomical variation. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, sonographers, medical students, radiography students, physiotherapy students, and other healthcare trainees involved in anatomy and medical imaging education. The study may provide useful information on the value of live ultrasound as a practical teaching resource for regional anatomy and may assist educators in integrating real-time imaging with conventional methods such as lectures, anatomical models, diagrams, and specimens. The study will conclude by determining the effect of live ultrasound demonstration on students’ understanding of regional structures. It is recommended that supervised live ultrasound demonstrations should be incorporated into anatomy teaching where appropriate equipment and trained personnel are available, with emphasis on correlating sonographic findings with established anatomical knowledge. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of live ultrasound demonstrations across different anatomical regions and levels of anatomy education.
